My Sculpture and Relief Art
My sculpture includes graceful abstract figurative stone sculptures; small colorful abstract wall reliefs; small wall-hanging assemblages of found objects; and a series of unique, one-of-a-kind ceramic fine art bookends based on pre-Columbian Indian figures, decorated with beads and other materials. In addition, my work with fabric and sewing crosses the boundary between sculpture and quilting and other textile constructions, and moves some of my flat non-objective art into three dimensions. My sculpture parallels my ongoing work with patterns and textures in my photography and other two-dimensional art.
I have always been very interested in relief art and its close relative, mosaic, especially Hindu, Assyrian, Greek, and Mayan relief sculpture and Islamic mosaics. Following this inspiration, the small reliefs, such as that in the center above, are a series of intricate decorative reliefs molded in plaster, impregnated for strength, and painted with many layers of oil paint. These intimate wall reliefs are excellent for small spaces and close viewing.
The stone sculptures are abstracts from the human figure, which I make using both traditional techniques and modern power tools. Many of these sculptures have been sold.
