My PaintingMy colorful contemporary paintings and art in other media-- whether figurative, abstract, or non-objective -- begins with my love of the physical world, especially the human figure, plants, household objects, and the sensuous artist's universe of color, form, and artists' media. Unlike much modern art, my painting has a frankly decorative intent, using bold color, line, texture, and pattern to animate strong compositions. My inspiration for painting, drawing, and pastels comes from modern masters of sensuality like Gauguin, Klimt, Matisse, Degas, and Van Gogh, as well as contemporary quiltmaking and stained glass. Much contemporary art aims to shock, but my paintings aim to provide sensual pleasure and psychic balance in our increasingly fragmented modern world. Whether attracted by color, form, movement, or expression, I like to begin with paint or other media that is swift and spontaneous, and work quickly to capture the subject. I may leave the painting rough and expressive, or I may refine the composition by simplifying, abstracting, or adding additional elements. Many of my paintings are decorated and energized with patterns, either painted or applied using collage. Both my figurative painting and my unique, non-objective patterned paintings and collages are lively yet harmonious and balanced. My gallery includes a wide variety of paintings, drawings, pastels, collages, and sculptures, which can be accessed below.
