My Figure Art

I take my inspiration as a figure painter from powerful realistic painters like Michaelangelo, and from modern sensual painters like Gauguin, Klimt, Matisse, Degas, and Van Gogh.  Then I add abstract and decorative elements inspired by crafts like contemporary quiltmaking, stained glass, mosaic, and weaving.  The sensuality, color, patterns, and textures of painting, drawing, and collage -- these are as important to me as the figure itself.  My figure art is more varied than the art of most contemporary artists: it ranges from expressionism to realism to abstraction; my paintings may be bold and simple or decorative and detailed.  I combine many other media with painting, and have also done innumerable figure drawings and pastels.

My male and female figure art always begin with live models.  I love drawing and painting from the living figure because of the figure's sensuous forms and the life and energy it brings to the act of drawing.  For male figures, I like to emphasize the complexity of the musculature of the figure with interesting line and shading; with female figures I like to paint abstractions from the major sensuous shapes of the body.

As a figure painter, I obviously respond to the dynamism and sensuality of the human body.  Whether attracted by color, form, movement, or expression, I begin with media that are swift and sensual, and work quickly to capture the figure.  This spontaneous figure drawing may complete the artwork, or I may work the figure into a complex painting or mixed media art work, often playful, energized with pattern and collage.
