My Figure Paintings

My figure paintings may be expressionistic, realistic, abstract, or decorative; they may be bold and simple or sensitive and detailed; they may use a sensual line or a passionate brushstroke -- but I think they all say the same thing:  Paint and painting are both fun!   Sensuality, color, patterns, the textures of painting -- these are as important to me as the figure itself.  I particularly love line, and a strong, fluid or abstract line drawing provides the foundation for almost all my figure paintings, no matter how abstract or expressionistic they may become.

I love painting from the human figure, because of the figure's sensuous forms and the life and energy it brings as a subject to the act of painting.  My male and female figure paintings always begin with live models.  For male figures, I like to emphasize the complexity of the musculature of the figure with interesting line and shading; with female figures I like to paint abstractions from the major sensuous shapes of the body.  I often like to start with an unexpected angle on the pose to challenge the viewer with unusal shapes.

My male and female figure paintings always begin with live models.  Whether attracted by color, form, movement, or expression, I begin with media that are swift and sensual, and work quickly to capture the figure.  This spontaneous figure drawing may complete the artwork, or I may work the figure into a complex painting, often playful, energized with pattern and collage.  Thus many of my figure "paintings" combine painting with other media.  I often paint directly over collage, for example, to add rich colors, patterns, or textures to translucent painting media.  Adding patterns through collage and other media to my paintings contributes intensity and energy.  I like to embed the figure in a matrix of patterns, where the patterns represent the energy field around the figure and from which the figure emerges.

The inspiration for my figure paintings comes from powerful Renaissance realists like Michaelangelo, and modern masters of sensuality like Gauguin, Klimt, Matisse, Degas, and Van Gogh.  Contemporary painting has branched off in many new directions, but figure painting adapts and retains its universal and timeless appeal and endless possibilities.
