My CollagesThe intricacy and sensuality of my collages have multiple roots: Japanese ukiyo-e prints; Japanese textiles and modern western quilts, both of which mix and overlay multiple patterns; my own sewing background; and my work with textures and multiple exposures in photography. Artistic inspiration also comes from masters of sensuality like Gauguin, Klimt, Matisse, Degas, and Van Gogh. My figurative collages often combine decorative patterns with the human figure or other objects drawn or painted in traditional artists' media. Many of my figure collages are quick and spontaneous, but often I work them into complex and sophisticated visual compositions, with overlaid elements providing spatial illusions. I seek to energize both the objects and the "negative space" in my compositions. After all, objects are just temporary configurations of energy and matter into recognizable forms, and both "solid" form and "empty" space are full of energy. I like to represent both form and energy -- a moment of visual balance between figure and ground, stability and motion, excitement and composure. Even more complex and unusual are my non-objective pattern collages, which create dynamic and sensuous worlds of ambiguous depth. These collages consist of allover patterns or symmetrical designs, built up of layers of textures and decorative pieces in a quilt-like manner, similar to the third image above. The challenge in this type of collage is the sensual integration of diverse elements. These collages aim to find order and harmony amidst complexity, to reveal the "divine irregularity" of the universe. These unique contemporary collages are visually stimulating, yet meditative.
